چکیده

Abstract. For more than half a century, exploring complete sequence of the oceanic crust from seafloor through Mohorovičić discontinuity (Moho) and into uppermost mantle has been one most challenging missions scientific ocean drilling. Such technological achievement would provide humankind with profound insights largest realm our planet expand fundamental understanding Earth's deep interior its geodynamic behavior. The formation new at mid-ocean ridges subsequent aging over millions years, leading to subduction, arc volcanism, recycling some components mantle, comprise dominant geological cycle matter energy on Earth. Although previous drilling cored drill holes old (> 110 Ma) young (< 20 crust, sampling remains relatively shallow 2 km intact crust) unrepresentative average crust. To date, no hole penetrates 100 m average-aged that records long-term history seawater–basalt exchange (60 90 Myr). In addition, nature, extent, evolution subseafloor biosphere within poorly unknown. address these fundamentally significant issues, an international workshop “Exploring Deep Oceanic Crust off Hawai`i” brought together 106 scientists engineers 16 countries represented entire spectrum disciplines, including petrologists, geophysicists, geochemists, microbiologists, modelers, drilling/logging engineers. aim was develop full International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) proposal 2.5 North Arch Hawai`i research vessel Chikyu. Permeability within Basaltic Oceanic Crust

Water-rock interactions within the seafloor are responsible for significant energy and solute fluxes between basaltic oceanic crust and the overlying ocean. Permeability is the primary hydrologic property controlling the form, intensity, and duration of seafloor fluid circulation, but after several decades of characterizing shallow oceanic basement, we are still learning how permeability is cre...

Continental crust generated in oceanic arcs

Thin oceanic crust is formed by decompression melting of the upper mantle at mid-ocean ridges, but the origin of the thick and buoyant continental crust is enigmatic. Juvenile continental crust may form from magmas erupted above intraoceanic subduction zones, where oceanic lithosphere subducts beneath other oceanic lithosphere. However, it is unclear why the subduction of dominantly basaltic oc...

• In situ indices of iron limitation in phytoplankton • Phytoplankton biomass and systematics with flowcytometry and microscopy North American scientists discussed the fundamental questions and observational details of proposed comparative studies of ecological processes in the upper waters of the oceanic subarctic Pacific. Chemical differentiation of the Earth: the relationship between mantle, continental crust, and oceanic crust

The average chemical compositions of the continental crust and the oceanic crust (represented by MORB), normalized to primitive mantle values and plotted as functions of the apparent bulk partition coefficient of each element, form surprisingly simple, complementary concentration patterns. In the continental crust, the maximum concentrations are on the order of 50 to 100 times the primitive-man...

Glacial cycles drive variations in the production of oceanic crust.

Glacial cycles redistribute water between oceans and continents, causing pressure changes in the upper mantle, with consequences for the melting of Earth's interior. Using Plio-Pleistocene sea-level variations as a forcing function, theoretical models of mid-ocean ridge dynamics that include melt transport predict temporal variations in crustal thickness of hundreds of meters. New bathymetry fr...
